Retired teachers are like no other; they have a wealth of knowledge and experience that can make a real difference in our community.
Children's Book Project
TRTA local chapters participate in the Children's Book Project. Donations of new (or very gently used) books are collected and donated to an organization so that children have more books to choose from. HLRTA collects baby board books and donates these books to the Baylor Scott and White hospital in Marble Falls. Every newborn baby receives a baby board book in the newborn "take home" bag when they leave the hospital.

Community Volunteer Service Hours
HLRTA members volunteer many hours of time in the community in a variety of ways. Attending meetings is a volunteer activity. Some members volunteer at the food bank, pet rescue places, senior living facilities, church activities, and watching their grandchildren. These are unpaid hours and members keep track of the time spent volunteering. But these hours have value for the community.
Last year TRTA members volunteered a total of 4,929,301 hours! At approximate value of even $15/hour, that is a total benefit of almost $74 MILLION of value added to the community!
Andra Harris Memorial Scholarship
The Andra Harris Memorial Scholarship is a remembrance of HLRTA member Andra Harris, a teacher with Marble Falls ISD, who served as President for 4 years and as a Legislative Committee chair. Andra started the silent auctions at the HLRTA Christmas and Scholarship luncheons, which funded an additional scholarship. Andra was an active member of several organizations, always positive and upbeat, a genuine caring person, and HLRTA wants her legacy to live on through the Andra Harris Memorial Scholarship.
HLRTA members award scholarships to college students preparing for a career in education or active teachers seeking to advance their education. Money for the scholarship is accumulated through donations and a silent auction at the December luncheon.
